About us
The Hessisches Staatsballett is the contemporary dance company of the state theatres in Darmstadt and Wiesbaden—a model project unique in Germany, uniting two cities, two houses, and one ensemble under a shared artistic vision. Since its founding in 2014, the Hessisches Staatsballett has become an important driving force in the field of dance—regionally, nationally, and internationally.
The company’s first artistic director, Tim Plegge, shaped its founding profile with a repertoire that combined classical storytelling traditions with contemporary movement languages. His focus lay on emotional accessibility, narrative strength, and the establishment of a powerful, technically accomplished ensemble capable of captivating a broad audience.
With the arrival of Bruno Heynderickx during the 2020/21 season, a new phase of artistic development began. Heynderickx, who brings long-standing experience as a curator, dance manager, and networker within the European dance scene, expanded the repertoire to include more contemporary voices, experimental formats, and interdisciplinary approaches. The company evolved into a place of artistic research and encounter—open to the unexpected, the unfinished, and the new.
Today, the ensemble consists of 28 international dancers who work with great artistic independence, technical precision, and stylistic diversity. The repertoire features works by choreographers such as Ohad Naharin, Sharon Eyal, Damien Jalet, Imre & Marne van Opstal, Xie Xin, as well as numerous rising voices of the international dance scene.
As co-founder of the Tanzplattform Rhein-Main—together with Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt—the Hessisches Staatsballett also plays a structural role in supporting dance. The platform strengthens visibility and working conditions for dance in the region, fosters sustainable networks, and enables artistic exchange between institutions, artists, and audiences.
In addition, the Hessisches Staatsballett is co-initiator of the Tanzfestival Rhein-Main, which annually presents local, national, and international productions, community formats, and educational programs in Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and other cities of the region. The festival is a central element of a vibrant, diverse, and accessible dance landscape.
A central concern of the company is not only to be present on stage but also to shape dance in ways that are educational, inclusive, and socially relevant. Programs such as Dance in Schools, workshops, open rehearsals, artist talks, and projects with local communities are integral parts of its work. Dance is understood as an open language that creates spaces for exchange, participation, and empowerment.
From this self-conception arises the Hessisches Staatsballett’s long-term vision of a House of Dance—a shared home for dance in the Rhine-Main region. This envisioned space would serve as a home for both the company and the independent scene: a production center, a creative meeting place, a laboratory for new formats, and a public forum for encounters between artists, audiences, and society.
This vision is based on the conviction that artistic excellence, institutional infrastructure, and free creativity are not mutually exclusive but can mutually enrich one another. The Tanzhaus / House of Dance aims to become a future model for dance—at the intersection of city and countryside, institution and free space, research and outreach.
With its structure spanning two cities, its international profile, its regional commitment, and its progressive outlook, the Hessisches Staatsballett today is far more than a company. It is a cultural ecosystem, a driving force for the further development of dance, and a place where movement is always also social.
