Maciej Kuźmiński

Born in 1985 in Poland, Maciej Kuźmiński was a witness to two significant transformations – the global shift from analog to digital world, and Poland’s transition from communism to democracy. He is a child of the changing world, thus his choreographic works explore themes of liquid identity, the absolute in spirituality, and the need for belonging. His deeply existential and philosophical pieces are seen as a contemporary extension of the Polish tradition in drama theater.

With over 30 international awards, Kuźmiński’s independent works form the repertoire of the Maciej Kuźmiński Company. As a guest artist, he has created full-evening works for esteemed companies such as Staatstheater Kassel, Polish Dance Theater, and Landestheater Linz, and numerous shorter pieces for companies like Scapino Ballet Rotterdam or Theater Osnabrück. Since 2014, he has toured 23 countries, and gained recognition for his pure, powerful, and dynamic movement language.

Since 2009 Kuźmiński has been developing Dynamic Phrasing, an original method for movement and composition, fostering ‘soft-power’ drawn from the force of gravity, and nourishing dancers’ embodied knowledge into a dynamic range of movement potential. The method has been taught at conservatories such as Codarts, ArtEZ or PERA GAU, in festivals like b12 and for companies. In 2022, the Dynamic Phrasing international certification program for teachers was launched. Now based in Rotterdam, Kuźmiński is also recognized as the first Polish-born alumnus of Trinity Laban in London and as the founder and director of the first Polish Dance Network.
