The upcoming season

Premieres

Broken Bob (WT)

Premiere Staatstheater Darmstadt, Großes Haus: Friday, 18. October 2024
Premiere Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Großes Haus: Friday, 29. November 2024

Following the successful productions “Timeless” by Xie Xin and “I’m afraid to forget your smile” by Imre & Marne van Opstal, which was nominated for the Der Faust 2023 theater prize, Hessisches Staatsballett unites the dance positions of these currently pioneering choreographers in a double bill for the first time in “Broken Bob” (WT). Marble is created in the earth like ashes after a fire. In a long transformation, under heat and pressure, its fine lines paint themselves into the rock; they tell of the past like the black of the flames’ devouring. Traces adorn and they remain. Hidden deep in the layers of being and buried in the superimposition of inner impressions, a broken sense of beauty emerges. Powerful and sublime. Rice paper, black powder and six bodies are the ingredients of Xie Xin’s new creation “Broken Sense of Beauty”. In this piece, the Chinese choreographer deals with a personal tragedy. At the latest when dance comes into play, it is all about movement. About movements and their structure. Does it exist outside the movement that creates it? At the latest when structure comes into play, it is about system. About systems and their meaning. Does it lie outside the system that generates it? At the latest when meaning comes into play, it’s about people. About people and about Bob. In their new creation “I am Bob”, Imre & Marne van Opstal explore the effects of patterns in dance. In close interaction with music and text, the Dutch siblings create a large choreographic web of identity.

Chronicles

We open the stage and leaf through the dance. For the 10th anniversary of the Hessisches Staatsballett, a special kind of gala is being created with short creations by illustrious contemporary choreographers. Each of these choreographic manuscripts tells an extraordinary story: readings that clash, thoughts that exchange, ideas that diverge. Completely without Narnia. Chronicles of the festive-galactic reality.

King Arthur

by Henry Purcell
Interdisciplinary project
Premiere: Saturday, 7. June 2025
Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Kleines Haus

A legendary hero does the honors and Staatstheater Wiesbaden invites you to the Round Table. Based on the baroque opera “King Arthur” by Henry Purcell, Hessisches Staatsballett, drama and musical theatre are creating a modern version of the legendary story of the British King Arthur. The groundbreaking musical work of the time, set to a five-act libretto and prologue by John Dryden, provides plenty of fuel for a spectacle at the end of the season.

Karussell

a dance piece for children between the ages 3 and 6
Premiere Staatstheater Darmstadt, Kammerspiele: Sunday, 11. June 2025

Life is not a child’s birthday party. But sometimes it is! Following the great success of “blau” by Felix Berner in previous seasons, Hessisches Staatsballett is once again planning a dance piece for the audience of the day after tomorrow. In keeping with the company’s tenth anniversary, there will be plenty to celebrate.

Startbahn 2025

Choreographies by dancers of Hessisches Staatsballett
Premiere Staatstheater Darmstadt, Kammerspiele: Friday, 13. June 2025

The “Startbahn” format enters the next round. For the fifth time, the creative wealth of Hessisches Staatsballett, consisting of many individual artistic voices, is once again on display this season. The dancers present their short choreographies at the Kammerspiele venue with a wide aesthetic and conceptual range. They try out their own concepts, develop personal dance styles and cultivate new forms of dance expression. For some of the choreographers, these are their first steps on this stage …

Last Work

On tour this season

An aura of the ephemeral shimmers through the energetic, dense dance piece Last Work by choreography legend Ohad Naharin. A sense of clarity and reflection, as if in the center of a hurricane. Unperturbed, a person in the background runs through the scenery. Seemingly fleeing or light-footedly dreamy, this body does not move from the spot. For all its dynamism, Last Work is defined by a subdued calm and meditative underlying tension, carried alongside the dance by the electronic sounds of German DJ Grischa Lichtenberger.

In the “Körper(ge)schichten” dance club, we are inspired by the layers and stories of our individual body biographies. We experiment with movement, create spaces together full of encounters, discoveries and the possibilities of creative expression. The dance club is based on various approaches to contemporary dance and movement improvisation. No previous dance experience necessary!

It is an invitation to explore dance and its related practices together as a speculative practice that allows us new perspectives and experiences of our togetherness and takes us to unknown places. In these places we can examine in all its dimensions what it means to be many.
