Dance in Dialogue with Beuys – Hessisches Staatsballett as a Guest at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Joseph Beuys’ death, the Hessisches Staatsballett took part in the action day “Block Beuys” at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt with the performance Encyclopedia of Experiences. In two performances at 2 pm and 4 pm, the company brought contemporary dance into direct dialogue with the artist’s extraordinary body of work.

The “Block Beuys,” with its materials, spatial installations and the concept of Social Sculpture, did not function as a traditional stage space but as an open, walkable environment. Visitors moved freely through the exhibition and experienced the dancers at close range. This created a distinctive spatial and conceptual connection between visual art and movement.

The choreography by Alessio Damiani understood the body as a carrier of experiences and memories. The performance responded sensitively to the architecture, objects and atmosphere of the site, developing in direct exchange with both the space and the audience. As a result, each performance took on its own unique course.

The action day offered the Hessisches Staatsballett the opportunity to present its repertoire in a museum context and to explore new forms of encounter with the public. The interplay between dance and exhibition opened up unfamiliar perspectives on both art forms.
