In the world premiere of “Never odd or eveN”, Canadian choreographer duo David Raymond & Tiffany Tregarthen and French composer Angèle David-Guillou merge dance and music into a poetic visual experience. The two-part structure of the palindrome—a word or phrase that reads the same forwards and backwards—serves as the starting point for an exploration of the idea that things are not simply black or white, beginning or end, one or the other. The work opens up spaces for surprise, mystery, and powerful emotion—creating a performance that engages both the mind and the heart, and takes the audience on a captivating journey through rhythm, sound, and movement.

The music composed for the piece by Angèle David-Guillou will be performed live by the Hessische Staatsorchester Wiesbaden.

David Raymond

Based in Vancouver, Out Innerspace Dance Theatre (OIS) was founded by David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen on the unceded territory of the Indigenous Coast Salish peoples.

David and Tiffany’s training and early careers took them to New York, South Korea, Brazil, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Italy before they began their collaboration during a two-year residency in Antwerp, Belgium. Their performance careers have included collaborations with Wen Wei Dance, Justine A. Chambers, Company 605, Dana Gingras, Beijing Modern Dance Company, and dancing with Kidd Pivot from 2013 to 2021.

For many years, OIS’s creations have toured nationally and internationally. The company received the CanDance Creation Fund in 2014, the Crystal Dance Prize in 2019, and was appointed Associate Artist of Agora de la Danse in Montreal for a three-year term.

Now in their 18th year of collaboration, David and Tiffany have created works for Ballet BC (Canada), Netherlands Dance Theatre 2, the Hessisches Staatsballett (Germany), and Gibney Dance (New York). Their latest work, Bygones, has recently been presented in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Belgium, and across Canada, including performances at Julidans (Amsterdam), Torino Danza, Theater Freiburg, and Canada’s National Arts Centre.

Through their training initiative Modus Operandi, which combines contemporary dance development with individualized mentorship, they are helping to cultivate some of Canada’s most inspiring emerging dance artists.
