Startbahn 2025

Choreographies by the dancers of the Hessian State Ballet

The Startbahn format enters its next round.

For the fifth time, the creative richness of the ensemble of the Hessian State Ballet, made up of many individual artistic voices, will be showcased in this season.

In terms of aesthetic and conceptual diversity, the dancers present their short choreographies in the Kammerspiele. In doing so, they experiment with their own concepts, develop personal dance styles, and cultivate new forms of dance expression. For some of the choreographers, these are their first steps on this stage.

Choreographies: Dancers of the Hessian State Ballet

World Premiere Part 2 on June 14, 2025, at 7:30 PM (with a post-performance talk on stage)

Startbahn Part 1

1 – imperfection

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume, Dance: Peng Chen
Music: Gaetano Donizetti, Enrico Caruso

I use the limits of consciousness
to block the growth of consciousness.
We trade wild truths
for proper phrases,
raw emotion
for trained reaction.

What do I fear more—the pain of being seen,
or the joy of being known? The same, so different.

Duration 10 Min.

2 – through the walls of my heart

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume: Ramon John
Music: Moses Sumney, serpentwithfeet
Dance: Ramon John, Masayoshi Katori

As I was sitting there, watching people rush by outside the window, dressed in their fancy suits and two piece sets, briefcases in their hands and headphones on their head, I couldn’t help but notice my own timeline changing. Slowing down. Life itself was rushing by and I was sitting there. Still. Motionless. Content. In the centre of this busy, beautiful „Lipstick Jungle“, in the land of the rising sun, there I was in my little Eden. An Eden of my own making. My room. My womb.
At 12pm, with some unsweetened lemon iced tea and a piece of Mille Crepe in front of me, my thoughts floating around like „Cranes in the sky“, attempting to escape those metal clouds, I suddenly felt a shift within me. We were moving. Closer. Like two parts of an entwined but separated particle, at opposite ends of the universe, my other half was tugging at me, altering my state. Our state, simultaneously. Motion.
As I leave my world behind, prancing on stilt-like feet through that door, outside, into this loud and chaotic reality, our nowness, to finally run and smash into you, time stops. Gazes meet, an overflow of nostalgia hits me and the lyrics „like a moth to a flame burned by the fire…“ are playing in the back of my head. I’m desperately grasping at my memories, wanting to go back in time, and stay right here in this moment, forever, and impatiently wanting to move forward. All the while you are there.
So this is it, standing at the centre of our universe, with your being piercing through the walls of my heart, I couldn’t help but wonder: Are we the „only lovers left alive“?

Duration 9 Min.

3 – Years of good rain

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume: Anthony Michael Pucci
Music: Suso Saiz, Sarah Vaughan, Richard Chartier, Andy Stott, Hana Stretton
Dance: Enzo Boffa, Sayaka Kado

And still there is room in this cup. You cannot really lose anything, because nothing was ever yours to lose. What you feel yourself holding in your arms is a gift that you received, but will have to give away again. Let go, like the melt vanishing into the soil. The day will finally come that this wanting game you keep playing will exhaust you. Only then, you will lay down and bite your teeth together as the unsorted pieces silently start drumming up from the depths.

4 – BEBI

Choreography, Concept, Set, Lights, Costume, Dance: Rita Winder
Choreography and Concept in collaboration with: Jeremy Curnier and Sayaka Kado
Text: Jeremy Curnier
Film: Jan van IJken

Hold your story
Hold it till you know it’s true
Hold it fresh like the curious palm of a child’s hand, gripped around the string of a pink balloon
Eyes absorbed with the colour of pink
Gliding
Along the bustling backdrop of life stroked by invisible air
Absorb your life
It’s the more existent choice
Absorb it in the way mosaic mud-cracks of desiccated earth soften under the downpour
Saturated by its experience
See your pain
Observe it in the palms of your well lived hands scarred by the presence of time
In time
You’ll see it’s the friend that allows you to realise the beauty of the sun settling sky as you sit solo
On a bench
Silent
Realise now the epiphanies of the present, with the passing of time, become the naivety of your past
Youth littered with vulnerable certainty which slaps you with reality
Blame everything but yourself until you only blame yourself
Shame becomes fertile
But shame is mostly futile
Notice
Notice the incessant talking of your mind growing terrorised when left unattended
Like the piercing shrills of a lonely child at night seeking comfort from the very thing it is ignored by
Cradle it
Caress the monstrous demons you fear to face
Faceless imagination creating noise which bombards your fear
It’s just noise
Overgrown hedges shaping mazes of thought
Habituated footsteps imprinting the over practiced ‘chemains’
Still we got out on to the streets of our city drawing lines between the personal and professional
These inefficient fences bleeding with the pressure of this perceived sense of me
How brave are we
See your image
Look at it for what it is
Through smudged mirrors of our self-judgements
And clean
Let your reflection be seen
Beam
Own your story
Melt it with the bold colours of your bravest dreams
Guiding strokes of a well lived brush along a well lived canvas
Drawn by humbles hands of a growing compassion

5 – un-follow

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume, Dramaturgy: Alessio Damiani
Music: Giuseppe Villarosa, Waldemar Martynel
Dance: Sayaka Kado, Milica Mucibabic, Marcos Novais
Assistance: Greta Dato

We are all in a shell society places around us—the norms, the roles, the silence. The
moment someone dares to peel off one layer, all eyes turn: judgment, curiosity, fear. Flashlights
become eyes, illuminating anyone who steps out. Some dare, taste liberty, then shrink back into
safety. Others push onward, hungry for truth, enduring pain and isolation, even sacrificing allies
for that fleeting sensation of flight. ..but at what cost? What are we willing to sacrifice for a
glimpse of what it means to be truly free?

Duration 14 Min.

6 – peasants

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume: Meilyn Kennedy
Music: The Dare, Cinoes, BrokinPaper, Aloe Blacc
Dance: Daniela Castro Hechavarría, Jorge Moro Argote, Yamil Ortiz, Marie Ramet, Vanessa Shield, Luke Watson

Never can I do in peace
That with which my Soul’s obsessed
Never take things at my ease
I must press on without rest.
Others only know elation
When things go their peaceful way,
Free with self-congratulation,
Giving thanks each time they pray.
I am caught in endless strife
Endless ferment,
endless dream
Worlds I would destroy forever,
Since I can create no world,
Since my world they notice never
Coursing round in magic whirl.
Dead and dumb, they stare away
At our deeds with scorn up yonder.
We and all our works decay –
Bowed beneath a yoke of pain,
So that yearning, dream and action
Unfulfilled to us remain
Therefore, let us risk our all,
Never resting, never tiring.
Not in silence dismal, dull,
Without action or desiring.

– Karl Marx (1836)

Startbahn Part 2

1 – Welcome to Dreamland

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume: Mei-Yun Lu
Music: Maestrale
Dance and Choreographic Collaboration: Benjamin Wilson

What you see may not be what you expect. In this space, movement is not just of the body—light, shadow, and stillness all dance. Let go of what you think you know, and step into a world where forms dissolve, and meaning shifts. Feel freely. Wander openly. Enjoy the journey.

2 – CASSILOU

Choreography: Marcos Novais, in collaboration with the dancers
Choreographic Assistance: Alessio Pirrone
Music: Yu Jing Shi
Set, Lighting, Dramaturgy: Marcos Novais
Costumes: Greta Dato
Dance: Marie Ramet and Enzo Boffa

In CASSILOU, two beings blur the line between self and other, tangled in harnesses like second
skin. They rise, fall, and ripple—echoes of wild emotions. From chaos to tenderness, pain to joy,
their animal bodies mirror the storm within: a creature learning to feel, to fight, to be.

3 – and so it is

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume, Dance: Kenedy Kallas
Music: Buddha`s Lounge
Assistance: Enzo Boffa, Yamil Ortiz

I’m Sorry
please Forgive me
Thank you
I Love you

4 – prelude to OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES

Concept, Costume, Lighting: Jorge Moro Argote
Research and Choreography: Jorge Moro Argote in collaboration with the dancers
Music: SOPHIE
Musical Arrangement: Matti Tauru
Dance: Meilyn Kennedy, Bridget Lee, Milica Mučibabić, Marcos Novais, Yamil Ortiz, Marie Ramet, Vanessa Shield, Luke Watson

The air hums with an ancient pulse. Shadows flicker, painting language across unseen walls. The floor shimmers with each step, part of an infinite melody. The world pulses with quiet urgency—muscles stretch, bones shift, breaths deepen. Clouds drift low, glowing and merging with charged air. A golden thread pulls, and the walls dissolve into sky. Weightless, fragments of yourself float like petals. A chill spreads, freeing yet sharp, as the horizon fractures into light. You step forward, and the world folds inward, carrying you into the infinite.

5 – The Willow Tree

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume, Dance: Masayoshi Katori
Music: The Animals, Oneohtrix Point Never & Elizabeth Fraser, Maurice Ravel

When the willow tree was standing tall and strong, and my dreams were bigger than my fears. I felt loved and protected yet it was not good enough for me to stay. The departure from the fairly land.

Regretting the things I said, I should have said and I should have not said. During countless sleepless nights, thinking about the life I didn’t choose. Longing for the safe place I once willingly abandoned, hoping to create one of my own one day.

Knowing that someday everything I’ve loved will be taken away from me forever, I accept this path. I’ve learned to live in spite of the hole in my heart. But whenever I focus solely on those absent, my heart still cries. Even the pain I haven’t experienced, I know that feeling.

Duration: 13 Min.

6 – Terminerinnerung

Choreography, Set, Lighting, Costume: Yamil Ortiz
Dance: Bridget Lee, Mei-Yun Lu, Enzo Boffa, Benjamin Wilson

I wonder what kinds of thoughts go through your head when you’re placed in a highly unpleasant situation and can’t get out of it. In my case, the thoughts that come to mind often lack coherence or logical structure.
