Residency Alexander Whitley

Can artificial intelligence (AI) co-create a choreographic process? This is the question explored by British choreographer Alexander Whitley in Mirror. In this work, Whitley experiments with the animation technique known as “motion matching,” which is commonly used in video game development. This AI-powered system dynamically selects and blends pre-recorded motion-capture data to generate fluid, lifelike character movements. Instead of conventional video game actions, however, Whitley trains the system
with dance movements. In a reciprocal process, dancers from Hessisches Staatsballett and virtual dancers interact within specific zones of choreographed action, jointly creating a unique choreographic work. At the heart of this process is a feedback loop that fosters a mutual exchange between virtual and physical performers.
