Two works more than three decades apart present an insight into the choreographic universe of the Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard.
With Magnificat (2025) and her legendary interpretation of The Rite of Spring (1993) Marie Chouinard combines two musical milestones by Johann Sebastian Bach and Igor Stravinsky to form an evening about the creative power of the body. In Magnificat a choreography of expansive group arrangements, intimate duets and solos unfolds to Bach’s eponymous choral work. Inspired by the voice of the Virgin Mary and her vision of a world free from oppression, Chouinard devises a dance composition of great clarity and intensity. The Rite of Spring, a contemporary dance classic ever since its world premiere in 1993, resists any narrative storytelling and focusses on life itself – movement and energy. Powerful solos and an incomparable body language produce a pulsating fabric of rhythm and presence.
