Hamlet: Dada Masilo / The Dance Factory

The widely acclaimed South African choreographer Dada Masilo, known for her powerful reinterpretations of classical works such as Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Rite of Spring, has reimagined Shakespeare’s tragedy as a one-hour dance theatre piece.

From the perspective of the young Ophelia, the audience is invited to explore the causes of her ultimate despair. Masilo’s interpretation examines misogyny and manipulation and seeks to make Ophelia’s descent into madness understandable.

Drawing on classical ballet, African dance, and historical dance forms, the work is based on an original composition by Thuthuka Sibisi, alongside music by Ann Masina (vocals), Leroy Mapholo (violin), and Mpho Mothiba (percussion).

Hamlet premiered in July 2024 at ImPulsTanz in Vienna and has since been performed worldwide. Shortly after the premiere, Masilo passed away unexpectedly in December 2024. The piece will tour for the final time as part of the International May Festival.
