Residency of Reiko Ohta & Joseph Simon in cooperation with the Tanztriennale

Residency from 23 March to 4 April 2026

Reiko Ohta (Japan/Denmark) completed her classical ballet training in Japan. Joseph Simon (France/The Netherlands) is a B-Boy with roots in hip-hop culture. They share a common interest and vision: to develop an unconventional approach to ballet. Through experimental methods, they seek to deconstruct elements of hip-hop, house dance, and ballet in order to challenge and playfully question the social behaviors, attitudes, and aesthetics typical of these styles. They explore how ballet can coexist and merge with street and club styles. Their work celebrates openness and exchange between subcultures, while valuing individuality, community, empowerment, and liberation.

Tanztriennale 2026

From June 14 to 21, 2026, the Tanztriennale will invite and engage dance professionals and
the general public to reflect on and experience the many facets of dance and the role it can
play in daily life, whether it be through seeing and doing or reflecting and discussing. The
Tanztriennale will highlight dance in all its potential and to engage with dance not only as a
performative art form for the stage, but also for its distinct ability to nourish more cohesive
societies and to stimulate new approaches for reinvention and transformative thinking. The
notion of coming together will play out in several realms – across dance cultures, across
generations, across diverse backgrounds.

Bio

Reiko Ohta is a Japanese dancer based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She completed her studies at Codarts University of the Arts with a one-year internship at Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. During her studies, she performed in works by Marco Goecke, Cayetano Soto, and Hofesh Shechter.

Recently, she has worked with choreographers such as Marina Mascarell, Antonin Rioche, and Silvia Giordano. Her own solo work A Flash of Oblivion was nominated for the International Solo Dance Theatre Festival Stuttgart 2021.

Joseph Simon (France, 1989) graduated from the ArtEZ School of Dance in Arnhem in 2014. During his studies, he focused on connecting his background as a B-Boy with contemporary dance. His ongoing interest in this subject led to a close exchange and collaboration with his fellow student Jonas Frey, which continues to this day.

Joseph considers it important to move through the dance field from different perspectives. For this reason, he also teaches at the Codarts Circus School and continues to develop his practice by taking classes and performing in works by artists such as Alida Dors, Jochen Heckmann, Erik Kaiel, Jean-Guillaume Weis, Eric Trottier, Jonas Frey, Christina Liakopoulou, Justin de Jager, and Dalton Jansen.
