On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Joseph Beuys\u2019 death, the Hessisches Staatsballett took part in the action day \u201cBlock Beuys\u201d at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt with the performance Encyclopedia of Experiences<\/em><\/strong>. In two performances at 2 pm and 4 pm, the company brought contemporary dance into direct dialogue with the artist\u2019s extraordinary body of work.<\/p>\n

The \u201cBlock Beuys,\u201d with its materials, spatial installations and the concept of Social Sculpture, did not function as a traditional stage space but as an open, walkable environment. Visitors moved freely through the exhibition and experienced the dancers at close range. This created a distinctive spatial and conceptual connection between visual art and movement.<\/p>\n

The choreography by Alessio Damiani<\/em> <\/strong>understood the body as a carrier of experiences and memories. The performance responded sensitively to the architecture, objects and atmosphere of the site, developing in direct exchange with both the space and the audience. As a result, each performance took on its own unique course.<\/p>\n

The action day offered the Hessisches Staatsballett the opportunity to present its repertoire in a museum context and to explore new forms of encounter with the public. The interplay between dance and exhibition opened up unfamiliar perspectives on both art forms.<\/p>\n

Alessio Damiani<\/strong> was born in Palermo, Italy, where he began his dance training. At the age of 18, he joined the Agora Coaching Project in Reggio Emilia under the direction of Michele Merola and Enrico Morelli. Since 2013, he has worked as a freelance dancer in Italy and Germany. He first joined the Hessisches Staatsballett as a guest in March 2017 and has been a permanent ensemble member since the 2017\/18 season.<\/p>\n

Alongside his work as a performer, Damiani has developed his career as a choreographer. For the Hessisches Staatsballett\u2019s young choreographers\u2019 platform Startbahn<\/em>, he created Burdens of Being<\/em> in 2023. The piece has been presented internationally and has received several awards, including first prize at the Barnes Crossing Festival in Cologne, as well as invitations to further festivals and residencies across Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
