Brazilian dancer Marcos Novais<\/strong> received intensive training in classical and contemporary ballet as well as jazz from 2003 to 2010. In 2011, he moved to S\u00e3o Paulo to complete his dance education at the Pavilh\u00e3o Art Center and began working as an apprentice with Companhia Divinadan\u00e7a. Since then, Novais has danced with Cisne Negro Dance Company (2012\u201313), Bal\u00e9 da Cidade de S\u00e3o Paulo (2013\u20132017), and Ballett Augsburg (2017\u20132019). From the 2019\/20 season onward, he has been a dancer with the ensemble of the Hessian State Ballet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

What inspired the starting point for your piece, and were there any major challenges along the way?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My inspiration usually comes from life experiences, relationships, and real events \u2014 even if the final work looks abstract to the audience. The core of the piece comes from moments and situations I\u2019m living through at that time.<\/p>\n

A big challenge for me is always choreographing on myself. I tend to be inconsistent and unsure, because every time I create something, I immediately find a new version that feels more interesting. It\u2019s hard to decide which one is \u201cbetter\u201d \u2014 the first idea or the last one.<\/p>\n

When did you begin to see choreography as a possible career path for yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I was young, I taught dance to kids and had to create choreography for their end-of-season performances. That\u2019s when I discovered my passion for choreographing. I\u2019m grateful that I\u2019ve been able to continue developing that path for years now, both with professional dancers and through my own work.<\/p>\n

How does your experience as a dancer influence your choreographic practice \u2014 and how does choreography influence the way you dance?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I feel that my choreography reflects the way my body and spirit want to move. My experience as a professional dancer influences my work a lot \u2014 it gives me a strong technical base and a more critical eye for how movement should be executed.
\nAt the same time, my choreographic thinking also shapes the way I dance. My experiences as a dancer are always present in my choreographic choices, even in ways I don\u2019t consciously notice.<\/p>\n

Is there something specific you hope to communicate to the audience through this piece?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dance, for me, is an art form where acting, singing, and movement all live together. Any way the body can bring emotion and life to the stage is dance. I invite the audience to feel whatever they want to feel while watching and without expectations.<\/p>\n

How do you choose the title for your piece?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s different every time, but usually the title connects metaphorically to the theme or idea that inspired the work.<\/p>\n

For the pieces included in our Work in Progress program: when and how do you decide that a piece is finished \u2014 or do you feel a piece is ever truly finished at all?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think a piece is ever truly finished. What we present is simply the best version possible for that moment and those circumstances. I\u2019m always satisfied with the result, but I always see possibilities for change. The version you see onstage is never exactly the first idea I had when I began creating.
