Trained between Barcelona and New York, Marcos Morau (born in 1982) studied photography, movement and theatre. Since graduating from the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University, he has been creating imaginary worlds and landscapes for theatre and dance stages, where movement and image meet and reinforce one another.
For more than ten years, Marcos Morau has led the artistic collective La Veronal, where he works as a director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer and lighting designer. The company’s works have been presented in more than thirty countries at major festivals and venues, including the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the Venice Biennale, Festival d’Avignon, Tanz im August in Berlin, Romaeuropa Festival, SIDance Festival in Seoul, Danse Danse Montréal and Sadler’s Wells in London.
In addition to his work with La Veronal, Marcos Morau is a guest artist with various companies and theatres around the world, where he develops new creations that consistently move between the performing arts and dance. These include Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Ballett Zürich, Compañía Nacional de Danza in Spain, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Carte Blanche Norway, Ballet of Luzerner Theater, Ballet of Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Ballet de Lorraine and the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen.
Marcos Morau’s works explore formats and artistic languages in which opera, dance and physical theatre enter into dialogue, seeking individual forms of expression and communication in an increasingly turbulent and ever-changing present. Morau combines his artistic practice with educational activities, teaching classes and workshops on his creative processes at conservatories and universities, including the Institut del Teatre, the University of the Arts in Strasbourg and Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris.
Marcos Morau has been awarded Spain’s National Dance Award and was most recently named Choreographer of the Year 2023 by tanz magazine.
